John E. Potter has seen it all in his 14-year career as president and CEO of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA), and before that during his term as the second longest-serving post master general of the United States Postal Service.

In Potter’s current role, he spearheads the mission of growing the economy in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia region by maximizing traffic through Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Dulles International Airport. Under his leadership, MWAA supports a workforce of more than 50,000 employees and facilitates travel for millions of passengers annually.

Despite leading two major federal entities, Potter has consistently approached his roles with a business mindset rooted in service.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, October 15, Potter joined Ajay Vinzé, dean of the Costello College of Business at George Mason University, for a candid conversation with students as part of the Costello Conversations series. One of his key messages: communicate with people in the way they best receive information. Potter exemplified this principle during the event, engaging the audience and sparking a lively Q&A session.

Potter was open about the challenges he’s faced throughout his career. Traits that once landed him in hot water ultimately became the hallmarks of his leadership style. “Don’t be afraid of speaking common sense,” he said. “Have the courage to speak up when you see something.” He emphasized the importance of doing your homework, trusting your instincts, and voicing your perspective—even when it goes against the grain.

Throughout the discussion, Potter and Dean Vinzé explored topics such as crisis management, preparedness, prioritizing people, scalability, and staying true to oneself. “What makes you strong is always having a clear vision, sticking to that mission, acting with a high level of integrity and always remembering where you came from,” he said. Potter encouraged the students to acquire the skillsets and then be open-minded about opportunities. He rose quickly in his career because he was always looking for that next challenge.

By sharing his insights and encouraging students to stay curious, prepared, and true to themselves, John E. Potter left a lasting impression on the next generation, inspiring them to lead with purpose and conviction. Costello Conversations continues to connect students with inspiring figures, enriching their educational experience and preparing them to lead with innovation and purpose.
