About the Accounting Area at the Costello College of Business
The accounting area faculty strive to make George Mason University's accounting program the preeminent accounting program in the metropolitan Washington, D.C., region.
The academic programs offered by the accounting academic area are nationally ranked and the undergraduate accounting concentration is the largest in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Further, the Area and the Costello College of Business is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, placing it amongst only 25 percent of AACSB-accredited business schools worldwide accredited in both business and accounting.
Integral to the accounting area's mission is the creation and dissemination of accounting knowledge to provide lifelong learning experiences for our students and support the needs of our stakeholders. Our faculty conduct highly impactful research and teach innovative courses in the fields of financial and tax reporting, accounting analytics, cost and managerial accounting, audit and forensic accounting as well governance and ethics.
Our students experience a high quality education to develop the knowledge and skills they need to become successful contributors to the accounting profession and business endeavors around the world. The accounting curriculum emphasizes a wholistic approach to learning that includes:
- Conceptual foundations of accounting and its technical applications
- Effective use and understanding of technology
- Enhancement of critical thinking and communication skills
To increase the community's participation in the development of future accounting professionals, the accounting area maintains a strong tradition of building partnerships through the Accounting Advisory Council.

Accounting Area Academic Programs
The Accounting Area's academic programs prepare students for professional careers in public, private, and governmental accounting.
Accounting Area Graduate Certificates
Our graduate accounting certificate programs offer opportunities for accounting professionals to acquire additional education in emerging fields. The accounting certificate programs can also serve as an entrance pathway to our master's in accounting program. Each certificate program is 12 credits, and courses qualify towards the 150 hours of academic credit needed to sit the CPA exam.
