Biography

Jim Hsieh is an associate professor of finance in the Costello College of Business at George Mason University.

Hsieh's research interests focus on corporate finance, mainly on corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions. Prior to joining the faculty at Mason in 2002, Hsieh taught several undergraduate courses at The Ohio State University.

  • Presented the paper titled, “Short Selling and Cross-Section of Corporate Bond Returns” at the Financial Management Association European Conference in Venice, Italy in June in 2015 (with coauthors Stephen Christophe, Michael Ferri, and Tao-Hsien King).
  • Presented the paper titled, “Why Investors Want to Know the Size of Your Shorts” at the European Finance Association annual meeting in Cambridge, England in 2013 (with coauthors Stephen Christophe and Mike Ferri).
  •   Presented the paper titled, “Why Investors Want to Know the Size of Your Shorts” at the Financial Management Association European Conference in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg in 2013 (with coauthors Stephen Christophe and Mike Ferri).
  • Awarded the Outstanding Paper Award from NTU International Finance Conference in 2012 for the paper titled “Short Selling and Corporate Bond Returns”  (coauthored with Michael G. Ferri, Stephen Christophe and Hsien Dolly King).
  • Presented the paper titled “Short Selling and Corporate Bond Returns” at the NTU International Conference on Finance in Taipei, Taiwan in 2012 and at the Financial Management Association Asian Conference in Shanghai, China in  2013 (with coauthors Michael Ferri, Dolly King, and Stephen Christophe). 
  • Presented the paper titled “Block Share Acquisitions and Bondholder Wealth Effects” (with coauthors) at the Financial Management Association Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado. 
  • Presented the paper titled “A Theory of Merger-Driven IPOs” at the American Finance Association in Denver, Colorado.
  • Presented the paper titled “Shareholder Voting Rights and Mutual Fund Trading in Takeovers” at the Financial Management Association Annual Meetings in Reno, Nevada. 
  • Published an article titled, “Informed Trading Before Analyst Downgrades: Evidence from Short Sellers” (with Stephen Christophe and Michael Ferri) in the Journal Of Financial Economics.
